the last of the summer sunshine

a few weekends ago, before Melbourne became the obligatory winter wonderland, Penny & i headed out in the last of the summer sunshine on a little vintage shopping adventure. while we didn’t document any of that (what is wrong with us?!) we did make a stop at The St Kilda Dispensary – where i went a bit snap happy (to say the least!)

i’m in love with the decor here – clean lines, hints of vintage & a whole pile of medical equipment. it fits in perfectly with the fact that back in the day, the building itself was actually the St Kilda Medical Dispensary!!
the owner Kristy is just lovely & found all the pieces herself – i’m just a teeeeensy bit jealous of her incredible finds! πŸ˜‰
Penny got straight to instagraming
while my attempt at a selfie failed (still getting the hang of the manual setting on my camera!)
thankfully there’s always coffee to save the day
i love the cute little sugar jars – our souvenir spoon was London Bridge!
(did i ever mention that i have a souvenir spoon collection?? because i do…)
this here is my favourite cozy corner
look at those light globes! and the crutches in the corner! and the little bursts of colour from the flowers scattered all around! ahhh so so perfect!
it has come to my attention that this is what i look like whenever this meal is placed in front of me. i literally just sit there grinning at it.
can you blame me though?
look at it! The ever so delicious veggie breakfast roll – with avo & feta mash, a fried egg, rocket & hollandaise sauce…oh man! i’m getting hungry just thinking about it!
Penny had a delicious scone & jam slider! how cute is it?!!
all the meals here are affordable & from the few i’ve tried, they’re also delicious (though i do keep having the veggie breakfast roll! it’s just too good!)
this is actually the hardest window to get a shot of – this was the best out of them all. the brightness meant the reflections were off the hook! sorry! haha

not wanting the deliciousness to end there, we decided to grab ourselves a couple of cupcakes from Southside Markets
unfortunately they didn’t taste as good as they looked…
actually, they were awful & after one tiny bite we both threw them out! such a waste & so so sad

we decided that the only way to get rid of the bad cupcake taste & cure our blues was to have even more food
naturally we went for chips with aioli dip
we also got some sparkling rose – the perfect companion to chips!
(haha probably not but it is delicious)
pretty roses that i wanted to take home with me

we had such a fun, food-filled day & i can’t believe those sunny days are already so far behind us! oh well – we’ll just have to wear more layers next time! πŸ˜‰

LA in a nutshell

our experience in LA was, in a nutshell, rushed.
i’m almost certain we spent half a day trying to find wedding rings downtown in the jewellery district! (we really did leave a lot of things last minute)

our days started off with two things – a delicious breakfast from EggSlut & a coffee from the Hart & the Hunter.
some days i needed a double caffeine hit – a takeaway latte and a piccolo!
the quiet courtyard at the Palihotel

Mike dropped me off at Jetrag Vintage & i very happily spent an hour browsing through all the incredible dresses. i actually only managed to get through 4 rows of dresses from the 50’s & 60’s – i could have spent all day in here! it’s a wonderland!
i tried on so many dresses (& bought the 2 on the right)
but i’m still wishing i got the one on the left here (even though it did have a tear in the seam) – look how perfect it was!

there was more coffee followed by more running around (& quite a bit of sitting around on LA freeways – pretty sure it’s always peak hour over there!)
america – i’ve gotta hand it to you…i’m liking your coffee! πŸ˜‰

for dinner we decided to head out to the Grove to give Gordon Ramsay’s new restaurant Fat Cow a try
i had a delicious beef pie, while poor Mike had to attempt to find his (very undercooked! eep!) steak under a mound of the funniest looking fries we had ever seen!

oh, did i mention we had more coffee?
and some of the tastiest food i’ve ever had
and of course more eggs

it all flew by so very quickly & before we knew it we were all packed & waiting to head to San Jose…

and so it begins

today marks two months since we headed off on our wonderful whirlwind holiday.
it was pure magic & i thought it was only fitting to share some photos from our trip.
the flight over was a total eye opener!
we flew business class with Virgin & it was an absolute dream!
(that was the first clue that this was no ordinary trip! come on guys – we were flying business class! of course we were plotting something! haha)
the champagne! the food! the leg space! the beds?!! did i mention the champagne?!

over the next few days i’ll share some of our many photos, while simultaneously wishing i was back there doing it all over again πŸ˜‰ pure magic!

here we go!
celebratory champagne
cheers to adventure!
Mikey relaxing with the paper
some (more) pre-dinner drinks & snacks
our view below

now the food was just out of this world! some of the tastiest food i ate on this holiday was on our flights (both over & back!)
this wasn’t even all of it! so so tasty

with ridiculously full bellies & the nice calming effects of the wine, it was time to get ready for bed…
our beds all sectioned off in our own little “cabin”
i got engrossed watching Looper (oh JGL! be still my heart!)
but the ceiling resembled the night sky, which was so very pretty to fall asleep to

we slept so soundly in fact, that the morning was quite a rushed blur.
our ear plugs worked a little too well so the poor flight steward had to gently shake my arm to wake me! hahaha! breakfast was delicious, but i was so sleepy i forgot to take a photo!

the time difference meant that we landed in LA before we actually left Melbourne!
haha hello again february 26th!
we grabbed our hire car & joined the rest of LA on the freeway
Mikey driving on the wrong side of the car on the wrong side of the road πŸ˜‰
our first stop was coffee at the Hart & the Hunter – the cutest little cafe in the foyer of our hotel
who knew you could get such great coffee in LA?! so delicious
this is the only picture we managed to snap of the outside of our hotel
funny story about the PaliHotel is that it was previously the Orbit Hostel – the same place where we both happened to be staying after we met in San Francisco 10 years ago! needless to say, this place holds a lot of memories for us πŸ˜‰
i was a little bit in love with this glass door
like all good tourists, we straight away started documenting the room
while the Pali Hotel does have all the looks of a great boutique hotel, when you get down to it, it just felt like staying at the Orbit Hostel – but with a paint job.
(almost certain the bedding is still remnant from it’s hostel days – which is kind of scary!)
don’t get me wrong, it’s super cute & all, but definitely not worth the money they are charging.
we spent the rest of the day out at the office so Mike could catch up with all the guys to discuss San Jose & the film premiere, so by the time we got back to West Hollywood we were super tired & super hungry…
so enter Mikes wonderful dinner suggestion…
of In-N-Out Burger!
burger & fries – animal style! oh man, was it delicious!
the fries were seriously too much for me (look at that??? it’s crazy!)
but it’s definitely one of, if not the tastiest burger i’ve ever eaten
(& i sure do eat a lot of burgers! hah!)
the perfect end to our first day in the USA

(i just realised that this blog posts makes it seem like all we do is eat!)

lazy sunday evenings

a mexican feast, delicious wine, a toasty warm fire & great friends = the perfect end to a long week. (long live sunday evening gatherings i say!)
Scarlett & Penny
Romy & i
such a lovely setting for a lazy Sunday evening (& delicious wine to boot!)
food to share
& food for oneself

Sydney mini-trip via my iPhone

we’re back from what may officially be the shortest trip ever!
after a 4am wake-up (ohhh…myyyy!!!) we were airport bound before landing in Sydney for a one night stay.
Mike was at a film course on both days, so i filled my time catching up with friends, looking at vintage/antique markets, drinking coffee, eating cupcakes, trying on & buying vintage dresses (& a cape!), taking photos of my food & swanning around in vintage dresses with my hair in braided crowns.
i was annoyingly stereotypical… πŸ˜‰
here it is in iphone photos…

this is the look i will give you if you take a photo of me with a flash when i have been up since 4am & i have only had one coffee (it was 9am)
this is the photo i will take (sans flash) 30 seconds later…
the incredible place my lovely friend Davey took me for brunch
i actually want to live here! look how beautiful it is ❀ ❀
(the food & coffee was superb as well!)
picture perfect view from our very gigantic table
more coffee…well, coffee stains after coffee
all caped up
beautiful Sydney sunsets
The Winery! oh my oh my!! most delicious dinner & absolutely stunning surroundings! seriously can’t talk this place up enough! (even more exciting that i spotted it on my last trip here & had it on my “to visit” list! eeeee)

day number two begins right here…
coffee with my love!
(not pictured is the absolutely repulsive “home-cured bacon”…! i gagged when i saw it & trying it had the same effect! never again people…!)
i then wandered over to Surry Hills & tried on a tonne of vintage dresses
i bought the two in the left picture (the one i’m wearing & the one hanging up behind me) but i left the one on the right. i’m kind of wishing i bought it, though Mike just told me i look very “little house on the prairie” in it…i think it might just be the hair πŸ˜‰
it’s also possible that i bought another cape! (though this one is more Lord of the Rings/Harry Potter-esque)
can i just add that this picture cracks me up! i was trying to fit in the whole cape while in such a teeny change room, but i’ve just ended up looking rather snooty! haha! the joy of change room photo snapping πŸ˜‰
pit stop at Kawa for the tastiest club sandwich ever…
…& some coffee & journalling time
then i caught up with Jadey for Milkshakes at Joe Blacks!
eeeee! when Mike suggested our mini trip to Sydney, i messaged Jadey on a total whim just to let her know i was going to be there & to see if she maybe had any plans to also be there…& she did!! ❀ ❀ ❀
usually we miss each by a couple of days, & last time i was up north i wasn’t able to see her 😦 but this time we managed a couple of hours of girl time – just drinking strawberry milkshakes (this was a ritual when we were 17/18 years old!), eating cupcakes in the park & catching up on all the goss ❀
it was a total stars aligning kind of moment…just pure magic!
thank you Sydney! i kind of love you!
i’ll be back very very soon

i’ve had to edit all of my photos as the app i was using has been altering them & reducing the quality. hopefully i haven’t missed anything, but if it starts to look a bit off, this is why.

island adventuring

when i visited my folks last month, we set off one sunday for an afternoon of boating & island adventuring

the water was nice & still (thankfully!) so we decided to head over to a deserted little island for a spot of afternoon tea

i wore my new favourite vintage dress (& still managed to jump off the boat! huzzah! props to me!)

first things first, champagne on the beach ❀ yes thank you!

afternoon feasting – island style!

lovely Anna-bananna

i went for a wander & found a whole pile of uprooted trees. they were so eerie & clumped together…so i didn’t spend too long down there…

instead i chose to take photos if my feet! (as you do!) while i was taking said photos, i noticed a little red boat had started steering in our direction…& after our dismay at forgetting to pack dessert(say what?!), i recognised the streets ice-cream logo immediately! an ice cream boat?!!! i was so excited about the whole thing i raced back to tell everyone, & even raced into the water to get my money off the boat (not smart…though i now know my dress dries rather quickly!), all the while forgetting to take photos of the strange little ice cream boat! oh well! we got our dessert…

…the only proof that we had ice creams is the wrapper scrunched up in Richo’s hand! πŸ˜‰

brother + sister + disappearing sunlight due to scary looking clouds = this photo

with the sun disappearing two things occurred – it got a little chilly (obviously) & we were overcome by a swarm of midgies! pretty sure eaten alive would be the best way to describe what started to happen! we quickly packed up and it was back on the boat & homeward bound ❀

our trusty captain & first mate (? hahaha i have no idea)

the sun reappeared for a few moments so we soaked up the last of the rays & i used it as a perfect photo op!

it was such a relaxing afternoon spent with such lovely company ❀ thank you family folks!
love you loads
